Federal Statistical Office: Inflation rate rises to 10.4 percent

Consumer prices rose faster in October than ever before in reunified Germany. According to the preliminary estimate of the Federal Statistical Office, the inflation rate for the current month was 10.4 percent.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the inflation rate in Germany is expected to rise to 10.4 percent in October compared to the same month last year – after having already reached 10.0 percent in September. The Federal Office also announced that consumer prices are expected to rise by 0.9 percent compared to September 2022.

Energy and food prices continue to rise

The price increases, especially for energy, were once again responsible for the high inflation. According to the Federal Statistical Office, energy prices increased by 43.0 percent compared to the previous year. Food prices also rose at an above-average rate of 20.3 percent compared to the same month last year.

Inflation rate rises to 10.0 percent in September

In September, the annual rate had risen to 10.0 percent – for the first time since autumn 1951. Rising energy costs as a result of the Russian war against Ukraine and rising food prices have been heating up inflation in Germany for months.
