Federal Nature Conservation Association: Czech nuclear reactors are never economical – Bavaria

According to opponents of nuclear power in Bavaria, the Czech Republic will not receive any economic offers for the planned construction of new nuclear power plants. “I am assuming that the Czech Republic will not receive any economic offers for the construction of new reactors. No wonder, the construction of new nuclear power plants is not economical,” said the chairman of the Federal Nature Conservation Association in Bavaria, Richard Mergner, on Tuesday to the German press. Agency in Munich.

As an example, Mergner referred to the current experience with nuclear power plant construction in France: “The new power plant block in Flamanville, France, for example, should have been connected to the grid in 2012, but it is still not finished. The estimated costs there have multiplied, from 3.3 billion to 3.3 billion now 18 billion euros.” Only through government subsidies could nuclear power plants remain competitive.

The Czech government of liberal-conservative Prime Minister Petr Fiala wants to order up to four new reactor blocks. These would also be built in close proximity to the borders to Germany and Austria. The French nuclear company EDF and its South Korean competitor KHNP are expected to submit binding offers by the end of April.

Mergner repeatedly warned about the risks of nuclear energy. Contrary to the myth that is often spread by CDU/CSU and FDP politicians in Germany, nuclear power is neither cheap, climate-neutral nor safe. “It is an uncontrollable dinosaur technology with an unresolved final repository issue that belongs on the scrap heap of history.”

In addition, their expansion is slowing down the long overdue energy transition. “And the damage from a potential disaster, which no insurance company is willing to insure, has not yet been priced in,” said Mergner. The dangers that threatened were recently shown by the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan. Even this high-tech country had to watch the catastrophe helplessly. “I’m glad that Germany has gotten out of nuclear power and I don’t want to have any more nuclear power plants near the border.”
