Training in nursing is apparently becoming more popular among young people again. According to a report by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, the number rose by seven percent in 2021 compared to the previous year.
In Germany, more and more young people are opting for training in nursing. This emerges from a current report by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, which is available to the newspapers of the Funke media group. According to this, the number of those who began their training in 2021 was around seven percent higher than in the previous year at 61,329 people.
In order to counteract the shortage of skilled workers and to make nursing and care for the elderly more attractive again, the federal government reformed nursing training in 2020 and introduced new, general training.
Many drop out of education
The number of trainees increased slightly in the first year after the changeover. Nursing associations, however, point out that the number of those who drop out of training is high. According to the report, nursing training is the largest training occupation in Germany with just over 61,000 trainees. However, training in nursing is still mainly chosen by women. The proportion of female trainees in 2021 was 76 percent, just like in the previous year.
According to a report by the Ministry for Family Affairs, nursing studies did not fare so well: the number of students rose only slightly here. In the 2021/22 winter semester, just under 50 percent of the study places on offer were actually taken. According to the Ministry for Family Affairs, further measures are needed to make studying more attractive.
Paus: “Positive development”
Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus was nonetheless pleased with the results of the report. “There is a massive shortage of skilled workers in nursing. We must therefore make this profession, which is so important for our society, more attractive and inspire more young people to do an apprenticeship,” she told the Funke newspapers.
The report shows that Germany is on the right track, even if there is still a lot to be done. Paus was referring above all to the small proportion of male trainees and the large number of unfilled study places. “But above all, the figures show a very positive development,” said Paus.
