Early in the morning, Robert Habeck suddenly finds himself at war. The sirens are wailing in Kiev, and the German Vice Chancellor is also making his way to the shelter as a precaution. It’s 4:40 a.m. Habeck crouches with others in the underground car park of his hotel. In the end it’s just another one of those alarms where nothing happens. But they are enough to destroy a night and wear people down, even in otherwise seemingly normal Kiev. “The alarm is over,” announces the voice of the Ukrainian warning app after an hour and a half. “May the force be with you.”
