Federal government wants to ban the sale of chip production to China – economy

According to company information, the federal government will probably ban the sale of a chip production facility by the Dortmund-based company Elmos to China. This decision will probably be made in the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Elmos announced on Monday. So far, the Ministry of Economics has announced that the takeover will probably be approved.

“Once the decision has been received, the parties involved will examine it in detail and then decide on further steps,” said Elmos. Nothing was disclosed about the reasons for the decision.

Elmos develops, produces and sells semiconductors primarily for use in cars. At the end of last year, the company announced that it wanted to sell the production of so-called wafers in Dortmund to the Swedish competitor Silex for a total of a good 85 million euros. Silex is a subsidiary of the Chinese Sai Group.

Against the resistance of several departments and at the urging of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the cabinet recently decided that the Chinese group Cosco could take a 24.9 percent stake in a terminal in the Port of Hamburg. Critics of such deals fear that China could have too much influence on the infrastructure or important branches of industry in Germany. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, which is responsible for examining the possible sale of Elmos, was initially unavailable for comment late Monday evening.
