In the coming week, the expert council of the new federal government is to begin its work and advise it on combating the corona pandemic – according to a media report, the composition of the newly created body has now been determined.
Streeck not an advisor under Merkel
According to “Welt am Sonntag”, the corona expert council includes virologists Christian Drosten and Hendrik Streeck. Drosten, chief virologist at the Berlin Charité, and Streeck, head of the virological institute at the University Clinic Bonn, had expressed very different opinions in the past about the necessary measures in the corona crisis. Unlike Drosten, Streeck was never called in to corona consultations under Chancellor Angela Merkel.
In addition to the two virologists, according to the report, Thomas Mertens, head of the Standing Vaccination Commission, Lothar Wieler, President of the Robert Koch Institute, the virologist Melanie Brinkmann from the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research, the physicist Viola Priesemann from the Max Planck Institute and the intensive care doctor Christian Karagiannidis from the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine belong to the committee.

Meet on Tuesday
According to “Welt am Sonntag”, the Expert Council will meet for the first time on Tuesday. According to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the assessments of the new committee are also decisive for possible further measures in view of the Omikron variant.
Scholz said on Thursday that it should be examined together with the new expert council to see whether the measures recently adopted, such as the 2G rules, were taking effect. “If necessary at short notice”, “new further discussions and decisions could then be on the agenda”.
