Instead of the ornate castle facades in the background, however, visitors see old, partly covered sheds in a mottled salmon pink. The wind swirls the dry earth over lawns without grass, thousands of sparsely leafy, scrawny trees reinforce the steppe-like impression. So much for a flower show with a program for senior citizens: the Federal Garden Show 2023 will at least partially live up to Mannheim’s reputation as the second ugliest city in Germany.
