A year after the collapse caused by the energy crisis, tax revenues are bubbling up again. In September, the federal and state governments received 80.6 billion euros. Nevertheless, the financial scope remains tight.
Federal and state tax revenue increased significantly again in September. They climbed by 13.3 percent to 80.6 billion euros compared to the same month last year. This emerges from the monthly report of the Federal Ministry of Finance, which is to be published today. In August there was already an increase of almost nine percent.
The FDP-led ministry pointed to weak figures from the previous year due to strong state aid at the time in the wake of the energy crisis. This can now be seen in the strong increases in wage tax and energy tax. In the first nine months together, tax revenue increased by only 2.5 percent to a good 608 billion euros. A moderate increase of almost three percent is expected for 2023 as a whole.
Cloudy outlook
However, new estimates from tax experts will be published next Thursday. It will then become clear whether the traffic light government will have more financial leeway or whether it will have to tighten its consolidation course.
The short-term outlook for the economy remains “noticeably cloudy,” the monthly report continued. Risks exist primarily with regard to geopolitical conflicts.
