After Signa’s bankruptcy: Fears for Galeria and Sportscheck in Leipzig
Dark clouds are once again gathering over the Leipzig Galeria department store on Grimmaische Straße. The reason is the insolvency of the parent company, Signa-Holding.
After just eight months, the last large city department stores in central Germany are already under threat again – including in Leipzig. The bankruptcy of Signa Holding endangers the future of the Galeria department store chain. SportScheck has filed for bankruptcy. Leipzig.The fear for the last large department stores in Central Germany is starting again. The recent insolvency of Signa Holding could also mean the end of the subsidiary Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof, fear retail experts. “The prospects are bleak,” said Prof. Gerrit Heinemann from the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences to this newspaper. “I don’t see any potential buyers for the department store chain because it doesn’t make any business sense. The Galeria chapter should be over by January at the latest, i.e. after the Christmas business.”
