FDP slows down EU plans for supply chains, SPD still wants to reach a compromise – economy

The directive that was supposed to oblige European companies to respect human rights and environmental protection abroad was actually ready. But Germany should refuse consent, demands the FDP. Development politicians are horrified.

The federal government has been negotiating for months, and now there is an open dispute about the planned EU supply chain directive. The FDP rejects Germany’s approval of the Brussels plans, which means that the necessary majority for the project is in question. The Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Ministry of Finance could not support the plans, according to a joint letter from Justice Minister Marco Buschmann and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (both FDP) on Thursday, which was available to the SZ. “In the Council of the European Union, this results in Germany abstaining, which ultimately has the effect of a ‘no’ vote,” the letter continues. This could put the entire directive in jeopardy.
