He has just represented the survivors of the Olympic assassination, soon he will be celebrating his 90th birthday: The FDP politician Gerhart Baum on the state of his party, climate protection – and his Russian mother, who fled during the October Revolution.

“Tree” is written on the bell of the Cologne apartment building, and the resident presses the opener. Gerhart Baum has long since returned to normal life. A photo in the bathroom reminds us of how it used to be: the former interior minister with his daughter in the park, surrounded by four security officers for protection from the RAF. Now the FDP politician, who still works as a lawyer, is 90 years old.
