Franz Beckenbauer is dead. FC Bayern Munich is holding a large memorial service. The memory of the “Emperor” is the focus.

Update from January 9th, 7:25 p.m: FC Bayern will hold a large memorial service for Franz Beckenbauer in its Allianz Arena on January 19th from 3 p.m. This was announced by the German football record champions. The people of Munich therefore invite “friends and companions from national and international sports, culture and politics, as well as all fans and the entire football family in general, to say goodbye to the unforgettable “Kaiser” in a special, emotional setting.”

The sympathy is gigantic. Fans, companions and friends are currently mourning the death of a man who not only gave Germany two World Cup titles as a player and coach. Beckenbauer is an idol – and was already a legend during his lifetime.

And this legend should now be given a fitting farewell. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge therefore wants to hold a large memorial service for Beckenbauer. “The entire world of football and beyond is mourning the loss of our friend Franz. FC Bayern should host a memorial service in his memory and gratitude in the stadium that would never have existed without him,” said the former CEO of FC Bayern Munich Picture.

Rummenigge shocked by Beckenbauer’s death

“I am deeply shocked. “Franz Beckenbauer rewrote the history of German football and left a lasting impact on it,” the supervisory board of the German record champions said in a statement from the club.

“He was my captain at FC Bayern, my coach at the national team, our president at Bayern and in all these roles he was not only successful but unique.” The 68-year-old Rummenigge continued: “German football is losing the greatest personality in its history .”

According to information from Picture Rummenigge spoke on the phone with honorary president Uli Hoeneß (72) on Monday and talked about a possible XXL memorial service.

Bavaria wants to examine the feasibility of the proposal. The funeral service would then take place in the 75,024-seat Allianz Arena. Hamburger SV, among others, held a farewell ceremony of similar proportions for Uwe Seeler in August 2022 in the Volksparkstadion.

Beckenbauer’s life is currently being retold in an ARD documentary. Many of his companions have their say – his brother Walter was extremely emotional in the film. (akl/dpa)
