Two years after leaving FC Bayern, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is returning to the FC Bayern supervisory board. This means that the rebuilding of the record champions will be a comeback for the alpha animals. The 67-year-old will again be involved in the operational team at Munich alongside Uli Hoeneß, who pulls the strings.
“We are happy to have Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as a member of our supervisory board. He is one of the great personalities in the history of our club, everyone knows his merits. His experience, his professional competence and his international network will help us enormously FC Bayern will continue to be successful in the future,” said Herbert Hainer, chairman of the supervisory board, in a club statement.

Successful duo back to Säbener Straße
June 2021 was the right time for Rummenigge to say goodbye to FC Bayern. The CEO saw the club “in an excellent position with Hainer, Kahn, Salihamidzic and Nagelsmann.”
But only two years later, the Bavarian world doesn’t look so healthy anymore. Oliver Kahn, Hasan Salihamidzic and Julian Nagelsmann have been released – and Rummenigge is making a comeback alongside the eternal club patron Hoeneß. With Rummenigge, “even more sporting expertise will be added,” said President Hainer before the election. “Incredibly great merits for the club” would go to his account and he was “very well respected in European football”.
Make important decisions in the squad
After the separation of CEO Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic, who are accused of poor personnel policy when putting together the team, the 67-year-old is now supposed to support Bayern primarily with squad planning for the coming season.
Rummenigge is well connected internationally and is still on the executive board of UEFA and the club association ECA. In close consultation with coach Thomas Tuchel, he should now help to build the team for the future.
Similar situation as after Sammer departure
The people of Munich had a similar situation in 2016: “We’ve had something like this before,” recalled the new CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. At that time, Matthias Sammer had left FC Bayern for health reasons. Only after more than a year was manager novice Salihamidzic presented by Hoeneß and Rummenigge as an (emergency) solution.
“We didn’t have a sports director or sports director on the team for quite a while. During that time, I worked very intensively with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the transfer business,” said Dreesen.
No rush when looking for Salihamidzic’s successor
FC Bayern want to take their time with the search for a successor to Salihamidzic. “A large caliber” is being sought, announced club president Hainer recently. “We are already on the way, we have ideas”.
Hoeneß’ eternal dream solution Max Eberl (RB Leipzig) or Markus Krösche (Eintracht Frankfurt) are publicly traded.
