National soccer goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had to take a break due to illness in preparation for the start of the Bundesliga.

As FC Bayern Munich announced, the 36-year-old was absent from training due to a gastrointestinal upset. What that means for August 5th, when the Munich team open the new season with Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt, is an open question.

A return in the final training would be groundbreaking for a mission on Friday (8:30 p.m.). If necessary, Neuer could also travel to Frankfurt. Should the captain not be able to play, Sven Ulreich (34) will play for the series champion. Goalkeeper number three is Johannes Schenk (19).

Most recently, Neuer was absent in February and March after knee surgery. At that time, too, Ulreich, who celebrates his birthday on August 3, was appointed as a representative. After four Bundesliga games and one game in the Champions League, Neuer was back in the Munich goal.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann has to do without Leon Goretzka and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting after injuries. Kingsley Coman is also missing after being suspended from last season.
