With Rangnick’s rejection it is clear: Bayern have ruined their reputation

Ralf Rangnick cancels FC Bayern Munich. Shouldn’t bother the glorious “Mia san Mia” club, which, according to Uli Hoeneß, was only “third choice” anyway. Perhaps people on Säbener Strasse need to understand that the chaos of the last few years has consequences.

Not Thomas Tuchel. Not Julian Nagelsmann. And neither does Ralf Rangnick. Coach at Being – or becoming – FC Bayern Munich is obviously not as attractive as you think on Säbener Straße. Jan-Christian Dreesen, Uli Hoeneß, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Max Eberl are now learning this bitter lesson.

There are several reasons for this and they are all self-inflicted. Only CEO Dreesen and sports director Eberl have a say in day-to-day business. Or Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic until May 2023. They first started the “long-term project” with coach Julian Nagelsmann, then ended it after 18 months in March 2023, although they didn’t cut a good figure. Two months later, minutes after winning the championship, the club made the separation of Kahn and Salihamidzic official. “The supervisory board made the decision to part ways with Oliver Kahn anything but easy,” said club president Herbert Hainer at the time.

FC Bayern Munich and the coach dismissals

Coach Tuchel had still negotiated his contract with Kahn and Salihamidzic. Their successors have decided to separate from Tuchel after this season – and have been thinking loudly about bringing Nagelsmann back. No wonder he decided against it. Because FC Bayern’s decisions since 2022 raise the question: What can the “Mia san mia” club still rely on? Or also: to whom? How much longer do those who are negotiating with the coach have anything to say? And how much do Hoeneß and Rummenigge pull the strings from the supervisory board?

The chaotic impression of the past few years is now taking its toll – especially when Hoeneß publicly describes Ralf Rangnick as the “third choice”. Who is surprised that the trainers have refused? So now comes the fourth choice – if any. Maybe the fifth or sixth. The current team has worn out top-class coaches with Nagelsmann and Tuchel. In the category that FC Bayern is looking for, the coaches don’t work for the money – they’re all millionaires. Title opportunities and a calm environment become crucial factors. And at least the latter is not the case at FC Bayern Munich. You first have to earn a good reputation on Säbener Straße. Eberl already has enough to do with finding a coach and restructuring the squad.
