FC Bayern: Lucas Hernandez is said to be in the sights of FC Barcelona

Could Lucas Hernandez also leave Bayern? A report speaks of an interest from FC Barcelona. But there is much to be said against it.
FC Barcelona is apparently dealing with a transfer of defender Lucas Hernandez from FC Bayern Munich. At least that’s what the Spanish newspaper reports Sports, which has close ties to the Catalans. Accordingly, the 26-year-old has been on Barca’s list for a long time to strengthen in the defensive area.
Above all, the Frenchman’s flexibility is appreciated around the Camp Nou. Hernandez can play both at centre-back and at left-back and would also give Barca coach Xavi an additional alternative to Jordi Alba. The veteran is still set, but there is a big gap in the squad behind the now 33-year-old.

Nevertheless, a transfer seems unlikely, because Bayern put the club’s record transfer fee of 80 million euros for Hernandez on the table in 2019. His contract in Munich runs until 2024. In terms of sport, that much is clear, so far he has only been able to partially meet the expectations at Bayern. Again and again he struggled with injuries or private problems, such as his threatened jail time last year. And a sale would noticeably relieve the salary structure.

Together with Dayot Upamecano, Tanguy Nianzou and Benjamin Pavard, who is likely to move inwards, he is to form the French quartet for central defence. It is also questionable whether Barca could even afford a transfer financially, especially since there is hardly any need in central defense. Hernandez’ compatriots Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti could leave the club in the summer. In return, however, the Catalans recently extended Ronald Araujo’s long-term contract until the summer of 2026. Andreas Christensen is also said to come from Chelsea, and in Gerard Pique and Eric Garcia there are two other established central defenders in the squad.
