FC Bayern in the individual review: Sad Upamecano – Sport

Has one or the other bad memory of this opponent. A prankster even wrote about a “Gladbach allergy” on the Internet; just a reminder of Igor de Camargo, who politely thanked him in 2011 when Neuer rushed out of the goal in his first Bundesliga game for Bayern and then punched into space. Bayern lost to Gladbach back then, and this time? No fault of Marcus Thuram’s goal, others were involved (see Upamecano). Otherwise largely underwhelmed.

Touchedly dealt with an intruder who tied himself to the goal post in an action of initially no apparent purpose in the first half. Even put a hand on the man’s shoulder, it looked like a casual chat between men. Otherwise little challenged at the back, stormed energetically in the second half.

Has played a reliable season so far, but this Gladbach goal was clearly his fault. Disoriented for a moment on the center line, Upamecano hit the ball and Thuram was already in a hurry. And Upamecano didn’t manage to catch up with his compatriot in the following 35 to 40 meters in the sprint. Then he lay on the floor full of shame, he knew: someone like Mathis de Ligt was sitting on the bench. And he definitely wants to be in the starting XI.

Cleaned up a counterattack in front of the oncoming Thuram after 15 minutes, almost looking a little bored. It might have been better if Hernández had been assigned to Thuram shortly before half-time – but he wasn’t.

Decided to do one of his energetic wing runs ten minutes before the end – with success. The assist went to Musiala, but the assist to assist went to Davies. Also valuable, just doesn’t appear in any statistics.

Getting more serious by the minute. Initiated the attacks as usual, then he stared forward, also looking for some gap, which rarely opened up in the Gladbach cover network of the “ten men around their own penalty area” brand. Was he able to smile again shortly before the end?

Marcel Sabitzer

Back in the starting eleven, even in the trickiest game of the season so far. So much for the increased appreciation for Sabitzer among the people of Munich. Would have liked to have shown his skills in the last 20 minutes when it came to avoiding defeat. But by then Nagelsmann had already replaced him.

Is back so Nagelsmann needs a place for the Frenchman in the first eleven. Rightly so, of course: he dribbled through half of the Gladbach defense once and his shot then went just over it. He didn’t have any better luck in front of goal that day.

Thomas Müller

Almost hit, but Yann Sommer came from somewhere. The Gladbach goalkeeper flew up, it seemed as if he was nestling against Müller’s back, which apparently confused him so much that he no longer hit the ball properly. But Müller was not the only one who failed because of Sommer (see Sané and Mané).

Leroy Sane

Small surprise: While half the world praised Jamal Musiala last week and a certain Lothar M. elevated the young national player to the rank of a future world footballer, Nagelsmann initially put Musiala on the bench. And brought Leroy Sané. He was the most agile Munich player in the first half, missed two big chances, but was unfortunately offside when Müller passed to Mané (and his back was somehow in the trajectory). Failed freely in front of Sommer in the second half – and finally defeated him. It saves the draw, after all.

Has never played against Borussia in the Bundesliga, so has no Gladbach allergy. With what, maybe? Had already scored two goals after 38 minutes, but both were disallowed for offside. Almost looked a little angry afterwards. Missed twice in two seconds with two shots to Sommer in the second half (of course!). Should take an antiallergic before the next Gladbach game as a precaution.

Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry came in a double pack. Once Musiala dribbled everyone out, then he played the decisive pass before Sané’s equalizer. Mathis de Ligt came too, but not as a defender, but as an emergency striker with strong headers. Almost scored to win, but who stood in his way? Sure, summer.
