According to sports director Max Eberl, FC Bayern Munich did not have any concrete discussions with Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso or other coaches when looking for a coach.

According to sports director Max Eberl FC Bayern Munich did not have any concrete discussions with Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso or with other coaches during its search for a coach.

“No, we haven’t spoken to anyone yet,” Eberl revealed on Sky before Bayern’s home game against FSV Mainz 05: “We first looked at ourselves and looked, and then of course discussions will begin at some point.”

This process also requires respect for other clubs, “because we know that one or two candidates also have another club with us,” explained Eberl. His verdict is therefore: “It is not an easy thing.”

Separation from Tuchel after the season

The German record champions and coach Thomas Tuchel agreed some time ago to part ways early after the end of the season. Bayer Leverkusen’s successful coach Alonso is considered the top candidate for successor, but he is also sought after by other top clubs and is under contract with Leverkusen until the end of June 2026.

Eberl would like to present a solution quickly, “but it has to be right,” he emphasized: “We have a list of priorities that we want to work through now.” There are “many facets” when looking for a coach – the possible transfer is one of them.
