At FC Bayern, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is the big surprise of the season. The Cameroonian’s contract expires at the end of the season. Discussions about his future are now ongoing.
Before the season, the roles were actually clearly divided: Lewandowski is number one at FC Bayern, Choupo-Moting only a substitute without a claim to a lot of playing time. Lewandowski is now gone – and Choupo-Moting is Munich’s top striker.
Eleven goals from 16 competitive games in the preliminary round (plus three assists) are good news for both sides, but they also complicate the negotiations that are pending in view of the Cameroonian’s expiring contract.
Choupo-Moting doesn’t want to be a backup
At the age of 33, Choupo-Moting is facing what will probably be his last major contract. Thanks to his performances in the past few months, some top clubs have again become aware of the native of Hamburg. FC Bayern would like to extend the contract with Choupo-Moting.
According to skyreporter Florian Plettenberg, the talks have now been recorded. Choupo-Moting’s demand is clear: he wants to play. FC Bayern waived the obligation to replace Lewandowski in the summer, but actually only postponed this. Choupo-Moting does not want to return to the reserve role at FCB.

The negotiations could therefore undoubtedly be difficult, especially since Manchester United are said to be interested in a transfer later this month.
Plettenberg reports that the first meeting went well. The negotiations, which were attended by Choupo-Moting and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic as well as technical director Marco Neppe and Choup-Moting’s father and agent, are said to be based on “good talks”. However, a quick decision is not to be expected.
