A person was killed in the explosion of a taxi outside a hospital in Liverpool. The anti-terrorist unit took over the investigation and three men were arrested.

British counter-terrorism police arrested three men following a fatal car explosion outside a Liverpool hospital. The men, between the ages of 21 and 29, were arrested in the Kensington district “under the anti-terror law,” police said. “Because of the circumstances” of the incident, the anti-terror police took over the investigation. Police controls were set up around the site of the explosion and roads were closed. The police called on the population to remain “calm but vigilant”.

In the explosion in front of a women’s clinic on Sunday morning, one person was killed and another was injured. The car – according to preliminary investigations a taxi – had exploded shortly after it had stopped in front of the entrance to the hospital.

Interior Minister: “terrible incident”

According to the police, the fatality is a male occupant of the car who could not be identified at first. The driver of the car was injured and taken to hospital.

Home Secretary Priti Patel wrote on Twitter that she was regularly kept up to date on developments in the case. It was a “terrible incident”. “Our police and emergency services are working hard to find out what happened,” added Patel.
