Fast food restaurants are on course for growth in Germany. In 2022, an average of four million guests visited McDonald’s, Starbucks and Co.
Fast food restaurants are becoming more and more popular in this country. Last year, the sales of fast-food chains in Germany grew to 28 billion euros. According to the Federal Association of System Gastronomy (BdS), this is 37 percent of all out-of-home gastronomy. “Every third euro spent in gastronomy in Germany is spent in the restaurants of system gastronomy,” according to the association.
Bakeries and coffee bars are growing strongly
Bakeries and coffee bars grew the strongest in the segment with a 30 and 23 percent increase in sales. Fast-food restaurants are particularly popular with young people: young people between the ages of 16 and 24 visit fast-food restaurants most frequently, followed by 35- to 54-year-olds. On the other hand, the millennials, ie the target group of 25 to 34 year olds, went to McDonald’s and other chains less often.
Better to pick up than have it delivered
While more than half of the visitors (56 percent) picked up the quick meal themselves in the restaurant (take away), 32 percent of all guests ate at McDonald’s, Starbucks or other fast food restaurants. Ten percent decided to take their car with them at the so-called drive-thru counter. Six percent had the food delivered.
3000 locations with 120,000 employees
Members of the Federal Association of System Gastronomy (BdS) include Autogrill, Burger King, KFC, McDonald’s, Nordsee, Pizza Hut, Starbucks and L’Osteria as well as newer concepts such as Purino, Greenkarma or Meatery. According to the BdS, it has 830 member companies that operate around 3,000 locations and have 120,000 employees.
According to the statistics portal Statista, the largest system restaurateur in Germany is the McDonald’s fast food restaurant chain, followed by Burger King and the Tank & Rast motorway service stations.
