Fashion chain wants to take over locations: salvation for more Galeria houses?

The Aachener fashion chain wants to continue running some Galeria locations. The leases have already been signed for four, with more to follow. In the end, there could be ten to 25 locations, says the managing director.

The Aachener fashion chain wants to take over several previous locations from Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof. Rental contracts have already been signed for the houses in Cottbus, Coburg, on Frankfurt’s Zeil and in Nuremberg-Langwasser. As soon as the previous contracts have been terminated, they would take effect, explained the managing director of the Aachener fashion chain, Friedrich Göbel.

In addition, one is in “well advanced negotiations” about leases for other Galeria locations, said Göbel. The fashion chain therefore assumes that it will be able to rent and continue to rent between ten and 25 Galeria department stores that are scheduled to close by next February. All employees at the locations would be taken on if they wanted to, said Göbel.

New concept to be presented in April

So far, the company, based in Dortmund, has seven branches, mainly in western and southwestern Germany. Göbel would like to set up so-called Aachen department stores in the Galeria areas. The concept for this is to be presented in April.

Last week, Göbel had declared that in addition to fashion and jewelry, the department stores should also offer toys, stationery, home textiles and household goods. Food is also possible, but Aachener does not want to offer this itself, but rather cooperate with partners. Large electrical appliances, for example, should no longer exist.

Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof announced last week that it would close 52 of its 129 locations. The number was later reduced to 47. Thousands of employees are affected.
