The victory of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 in the World Car of the Year 2023 award did not come as a complete surprise. However, the fact that the Korean carmaker cleared up so impressively in the individual categories left many a competitor at the New York Auto Show thoughtful.
The Korean Hyundai Group has been going full throttle for years – especially in the direction of electromobility. After numerous smaller prizes all over the world, the new Hyundai Ioniq 6 can now look forward to one of the most prestigious awards in the automotive sector: it was voted Car of the Year 2023 by the international jury of around one hundred most important car journalists from a total of 32 nations – the World Car of the Year 2023 – elected. The award ceremony itself traditionally takes place at the New York Auto Show in the Jacob Javits Center. In the past year, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the little brother of the electric mid-range model, has prevailed. “We are very pleased to receive this prestigious award two years in a row. In the overall ranking, the electric mid-range sedan prevailed against the Kia Niro in second place and the BMW iX1 in third place. Two Koreans in first and second place in front of a new electric SUV from Germany. In addition, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 was also named Electric Car of the Year, only just beating the competitors Lucid Air and BMW i7. A total of 21 electric vehicles competed in the category. The result in the luxury car of the year category was similarly close. Here the Lucid Air was able to surprisingly prevail against the favorite BMW 7 Series / i7. In third place with the Genesis G90 also a model from the Hyundai Group. In addition to the overall victory and the top place in the electric vehicle category, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 was also able to claim class victory in the World Car Design of the Year category. Here the electric sedan prevailed against Range Rover and Lucid Air, which were in second place with the same number of points.

We look forward to hosting the award ceremony together again during the opening of the 2023 show in April.” In the Sports Car / World Performance Car of the Year 2023 category, a vehicle from the Hyundai Group also won with the 585 hp Kia EV6 GT. In the other places with Toyota GT Corolla and Nissan Z also two new models from Asia. There was a winner from Europe with the Citroen C3, which prevailed against the Chinese Great Wall Motor Ora Funky Cat and the Volkswagen Taigo in the small car / city vehicle class.
