“Eire (Ireland) loves Sinéad”: The Irish President also wants to attend the funeral service for the late singer Sinéad O’Connor.

Almost two weeks after the death of Sinéad O’Connor, hundreds of people in Bray, Ireland, said goodbye to the singer. Mourners lined the edge of the coastal road on Tuesday where O’Connor had lived and where the funeral procession was to pass after the private burial. Flowers, messages and Irish flags were laid in front of her house, and a pink chair was also placed in front of it. The singer (“Nothing Compares 2 U”) died in London on July 26 at the age of 56. The cause of death is not yet known.

“The expression of sadness and appreciation for the life and work of Sinead O’Connor shows the deep impact she had on the Irish people,” said Irish President Michael D. Higgins, who declined to attend the memorial service. “Sinead’s unique contribution included the experience of great vulnerability coupled with a magnificent, extraordinary level of creativity, expressed through her voice, music and songs.”

The rush in Bray was great. On the promenade, some onlookers climbed walls. Train connections to the coastal town south of the capital Dublin are “significantly busier than usual”, said Irish Rail. On nearby Bray Head hill, an installation commemorated O’Connor: “Eire (Ireland) loves Sinéad,” read in large letters and a heart.

“We will never see a woman like Sinead in Ireland again,” said Veronica Kelly, who had traveled from the town of Shannon at night, to reporters. “Sinéad gave a voice to those without a voice. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and stood up for black people and gay and refugee rights.”
