“Far too many traffic offenders on the road” – Bavaria

On the “Respect in Focus” road safety campaign day, the police in Bavaria registered 10,361 violations. “There are still far too many traffic offenders on the road. Unfortunately, they are apparently not aware that their misconduct can endanger themselves and others,” said Interior State Secretary Sandro Kirchner (CSU) after the 24-hour traffic controls in Munich on Wednesday. The nationwide day of action was primarily about showing consideration for vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians and children.

From Tuesday to Wednesday morning, around 1,900 police officers were on duty nationwide and carried out 23,000 checks. The Interior Ministry’s balance sheet: 54 crimes such as drunk driving or driving without a license. In 5,150 cases, road users were traveling too fast, and 1,147 of them parked incorrectly, especially on sidewalks and cycle paths. 203 drivers ran red lights and 69 did not maintain a safe distance when overtaking cyclists.

At the start of the priority checks on Tuesday, Kirchner pointed out the high number of bicycle accidents. He demanded that car drivers, truck drivers and cyclists finally have to show more consideration for each other.
