Will an old German classic become the goal anthem at the 2024 European Championship? The Munich police are now supporting a fan petition that is currently running in their own way.

Munich – There are still about two and a half months until the ball is at the European Championship 2024 rolls. Due to the convincing victory of the German national team against France (0:2) last weekend, the tournament is now slowly but surely becoming more and more in focus. The fuss surrounding the DFB’s Nike deal also brought the national team loudly into the headlines again. Now, however, a new topic is emerging: fans want to make a very special goal anthem possible for the European Championship via an online petition. Even the Munich police now – indirectly – support the fan demand.

EM 2024: Will the German classic be the goal anthem in the summer? Munich police support petition

The trigger is the Adidas advertisement for the DFB team’s new home jersey for the home European Championship in the summer. Now fans are demanding that the hit from the 80s be used as the goal anthem for the tournament. The Munich police don’t seem averse either. © Youtube: adidasfootball / X: Munich Police

The background is an Adidas clip for the team’s new home jersey for the European Championship tournament. Everything there revolves around the question: “What is typically German?” The song used for the advertising is Peter Schilling’s hit from the 80s: “Major Tom (completely detached)”. This is now so well received that fans want the song as a goal anthem. The online petition has already collected over twenty thousand signatures. On Monday morning (March 25th) even the Munich police spoke out.

“We are checking thoroughly again and waiting for the start of EURO2024 in Munich. Because our…” begins the post on X (formerly Twitter). And then continues with the famous song lyric: “Effectiveness determines action. You rely blindly on the other person. Everyone knows exactly what depends on them. Then he takes off and completely detached…”

It is unclear whether police support can ensure that the classic song is actually played when goals are scored in the stadium. But the contribution was well received. “Great,” writes one commentator.
