Today the topic of basic child protection is to be discussed in the Bundestag in its first reading. Criticism comes in advance from the CDU.
The deputy CDU chairwoman Silvia Breher has the planned one Basic child protection criticized as an empty promise. “This federal government bill does not deserve the big name of basic child welfare,” Breher told the German Press Agency.
“It promises a lot, but delivers nothing of it.” The money that will be needed for a new administration starting next year would have to be invested directly in children and young people and in early childhood education.
Today, basic child welfare will be discussed in the first reading in the Bundestag, and an expert hearing in the family committee will follow on Monday. It remains unclear exactly when the social policy project of the traffic light coalition will be decided in the Bundestag and Bundesrat.
At least the implementing authority, the Federal Employment Agency, does not consider the schedule set by Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) – starting on January 1, 2025 – to be feasible. Instead, it proposes in a statement that basic child protection should only be gradually introduced from July 1, 2025.
In the basic child security, previous benefits such as child benefit, benefits from the citizen’s benefit for children or the child allowance should be bundled. The Greens and the FDP had argued hard for months about financing and finally agreed on an additional cost of 2.4 billion euros.
