Fair housework is often an illusion for couples: it works better that way

Is it easier for people who work from home to combine family and career? This is especially true for men – because they overestimate their share of housework. Family expert Laura Fröhlich and couple therapist Dr. Sharon Brehm explain how things can be improved.

Turn on the washing machine, go shopping, cook a small lunch: In the home office, part of the housework can – felt – be done on the side. At the same time commuting time is eliminated. The exodus from company headquarters was seen as an opportunity for reconciliation. For couples who work together at home, this could strengthen the fairness in the partnership. The effect could have been lasting: children see a fairer distribution and experience it as normal.
