Ten design classics are for sale at “Bares for Rares”. The Deutschmanek expert is enthusiastic, but the dealers are stingy when it comes to the price.

You have ten copies in your luggage: Anja Welteroth and Alwin Müller from Eitorf come to “Bares for Rares” with designer chairs. “They belong to our homeland association and were donated to us by a local furniture store,” explain the two salespeople. But since the chairs do not optically fit into the old farmhouse, they are supposed to bring money into the club’s coffers in the ZDF junk show by Horst Lichter. “We cannot easily part with it,” says Welteroth.

Expert Sven Deutschmanek is enthusiastic. “These are designer chairs by Gerd Lange that were manufactured by the Thonet company,” explains the “Bares for Rares” specialist. The furniture was all produced in 1994, but the design comes from the 1970s. The special thing about the chairs with the name “Flex 2000” is that they are made of beech with a plastic shell and can therefore be stacked. “The condition seems to be quite good.”

“Bares for Rares” expert calls mega estimate

Welteroth and Müller would like 100 euros per chair – a total of 1000 euros. “It’s for a good cause, for our club.” But the expert Deutschmanek does not agree with the price. “There has been a lot of hype about these chairs in recent years,” he explains. “Sometimes they are offered for 600 euros.” “Each piece?” Asks Lichter in astonishment. “Yes, but that is grossly exaggerated and unrealistic,” replies Deutschmanek. Its price for the ten chairs is between 2000 and 2500 euros. But the dealers see it completely differently.

Everyone in the dealer room is convinced of the chairs, but Christian Vechtel’s first bid is only 300 euros – for everyone. Welteroth and Müller look at each other in disbelief. “I think they’re very beautiful, but I have a problem: where do I put them?” Says Friedrich Häusser. Vechtel wants to cut things short and is still offering 550 euros. But that is only a fraction of the expertise. The two sellers do not want to give up the chairs for less than 900 euros. Vechtel finally gives in.

Although that is not even half of the expertise, Welteroth and Müller are satisfied with the price achieved. You don’t have to take the chairs back with you and you can look forward to the amount for the club’s treasury.
