BMW spices up the 8 series. In addition to an extended standard equipment with sportier brakes and a more dynamic face, there is above all a larger touchscreen and new materials in the interior.

The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé, along with the Mercedes CLS (which is being discontinued) and the Audi A7, is a representative of a dying breed. Because in the ongoing SUV and electric whirlwind, the classic touring coupés in the style of a classic Gran Turismo are almost being lost. The 8 series in particular has a sworn fan community who are not impressed by the exaggerated rear design. With good reason, because the BMW 8 Series Grand Coupé cuts a fine figure, especially when it comes to dynamics. This applies to the commercial versions and even more to the M8 Competition. And that with a curb weight of almost two tons.

As good old automotive tradition and sales experts want it, a model update is due in the middle of the life cycle. However, in the 8 model series it is rather manageable, based on optical and equipment details and of course on infotainment. This means that the BMW 8 Series is still available as a coupe and convertible, with six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines (diesel and petrol) that have a power output range from 245 kW / 333 hp to 390 kW / 530 hp with the BMW M850i xDrive. As is usual with high-performance BMWs, the customer can choose between classic rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The sporty spearhead is still the BMW M8 Competition with 460 kW / 625 hp.

BMW makes a virtue out of necessity and will equip the facelift models with the popular M-Sport package as standard from March, which is particularly evident in the more dynamic front, the at least 19-inch wheels with double-spoke rims and the M brake system with the shows blue saddles. If you grab the top of the shelf and secure one of the top models, you will get a 20-inch wheel, an M limited-slip differential and an even more stable brake. The in-line six-cylinder faction must order the M Sports package Pro to enjoy these details. So that the vehicle in front also knows what is approaching in the rear-view mirror, the kidney grille is equipped with waterfall lighting that can be deactivated by the driver. If you put the M8 Competition Coupé in the garage, you get the laser light as standard.

All versions benefit from the 12.3-inch touchscreen, which replaces the 10.25-inch display as the command center. The new monitor is fed by the latest version of the infotainment software. Similar to the M-Sport body package, the driver now grabs an M steering wheel and its thicker rim as standard. There are also multifunction seats and merino leather, which upgrade the interior at no extra charge.

If you still want something special, you can add a few bills and get one of the special models called “The 8 x Jeff Koons”, which are limited to 100 vehicles and were designed by the American artist. BMW previously collaborated with Jeff Koons on the BMW M3 GT2 Art Car in 2010. The Munich-based car manufacturer is now celebrating another special model with a multi-layer paint finish in eleven colors and an interior trimmed with the finest leather in shades of red and blue. The artist’s signature is engraved so that the passengers also know that they are not sitting in a 0815 BMW 8 Series. Its price: over 300,000 euros.
