Exposure in clinics: Omicron peak not yet reached

Status: 02/22/2022 06:55 a.m

According to the hospital association, the climax of exposure to the omicron wave is still to come. The RKI reported 125,902 new infections, the nationwide seven-day incidence fell again in a daily comparison and is now 1306.8.

The clinics in Germany are still approaching the peak of the burden from the omicron wave: That said the deputy chairman of the German Hospital Society (DKG), Andreas Wagener, the “Rheinische Post”. “The apex of omicron exposure in hospitals has not yet been fully reached,” says Wagener. “Currently, the number of occupancy rates in hospitals is still increasing, although the momentum is continuing to weaken.”

In the normal wards in particular, the number of cases continues to rise, said Wagener. The occupancy of the intensive care units is currently stable across Germany. “We are currently assuming that we will continue to remain in the stable area with intensive occupancy.” Nevertheless, the situation for the hospitals remains stressful.

Three-stage plan for easing the measures

Experts had pointed out that falling incidences are reflected in hospital occupancy figures with a time lag. A little over a week ago, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported a declining seven-day incidence for the first time in weeks. This also promoted calls for relaxation of the state corona rules.

The federal and state governments had agreed on a three-stage plan for openings up to a possible end of all more extensive requirements on March 20th. A so-called basic protection should also remain after that. A new nationwide legal basis is required for this, as the previous one expires on March 19. Different assessments have been made by the SPD, Greens and FDP as to which measures are still needed. The FDP recently insisted on the lifting of all measures from March 20th.

Seven-day incidence drops to 1306.8

The nationwide seven-day incidence fell again. The RKI gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week as 1306.8. For comparison: the day before the value was 1346.8. A week ago, the nationwide incidence was 1437.5 (previous month: 772.7). The health authorities in Germany reported 125,902 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. A week ago there were 159,217 infections.

Incomplete data

Experts assume a high number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data. Test capacities and health authorities are therefore at the limit in many places, and contacts are only tracked to a limited extent. In addition, there is likely to be a larger number of people who no longer have their infection confirmed by a PCR test – the infection is therefore not included in the official statistics.

More than 13.7 million infections

According to the new information, 306 further deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. The number of people who died from or involved a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 121,603.

The RKI has counted 13,762,895 infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected. The RKI gave the number of recovered people on Tuesday as 10,031,200. The number of corona-infected patients who came to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 6.06 according to the RKI (Sunday: 6.27). Among them are many people with a positive corona test who have another main illness.
