A large cloud of smoke over Hafencity shocked many Hamburgers on Friday. The reason: a fire at a construction site. Apparently, several gas bottles explode.

There were several explosions on a ten-story building on a construction site in Hamburg’s HafenCity on Friday. There were bangs, which police said came from gas cylinders. A fire also started in the afternoon incident. The fire chief said no one was injured. Rescuers took a crane operator to an ambulance, where he was spotted by paramedics.

The police had asked residents of Hafencity and neighboring districts to keep windows and doors closed because of the smoke. In the late afternoon, however, there was no longer any smoke to be seen. “The fire is out,” confirmed a police spokesman. Due to the fire brigade, traffic on the U4 subway line was temporarily interrupted. According to the information, a shopping center is under construction at the scene of the fire.

It was only on May 25th that a fire broke out during renovation work on a house roof in Hamburg’s Neustadt district. Two surrounding hotels had been evacuated. A large cloud of smoke had blown over downtown.
