Explorations before completion

In Berlin the signs are red-green-red
During the explorations for a government in Berlin, a decision has been made: The SPD and the Greens want to conclude talks with the left on Friday and then decide whether to start coalition negotiations.
In Berlin, a new edition of the alliance of the SPD, the Greens and the Left Party is emerging. SPD top candidate Franziska Giffey announced final exploratory talks with the Greens and the Left for Friday.
A joint exploratory paper is to be drawn up, which is to form the basis for coalition negotiations.
Giffey said that the exploratory talks saw most of the intersections with the Greens and Leftists. The question of how much of its program the SPD could implement in a future partnership “was our guiding principle”.
Jarasch: We are a big step further
For the Greens, top candidate Bettina Jarasch declared: “We are a big step further. We came out of these elections stronger, that means a clear mandate for us.”
This is to provide for climate protection, housing and fair rents and to strengthen the economy. We had very intensive talks with all democratic parties. “We agreed in the exploratory team that we are going into the third exploratory phase with the SPD and the Left,” said Jarasch.
In the House of Representatives election on September 26th, the SPD and the Greens became the strongest and second strongest force and want to govern together again. Mayor-designate Giffey had considered bringing the FDP on board as a third partner instead of the left. The Liberals now seem out of the running.
Sharp criticism from the FDP and CDU
FDP state chief Christoph Meyer accused Giffey in a first statement of betraying the basis of their election campaign and of having gambled away the chances of a real restart. The promised change is nothing more than an “empty phrase”, said Meyer.
The Berlin CDU leader Kai Wegner called the announcement of red-green-red coalition negotiations a “low blow for Berlin, a city of opportunities”. “Berlin urgently needs a real restart. Instead, it threatens to continue as it does with arguments and standstill,” explained Wegner.
