Experiences from Syria: Surviving under Siege – Politics

Syrian filmmaker Said al-Batal escaped the horrors of Eastern Ghouta. He remembers the constant shelling, starvation and Russia’s humanitarian corridor, which brought even greater suffering to the people of the region.

At least one positive aspect of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, says Said al-Batal: “At least you in Europe now believe what the Russians are capable of.” The Syrian documentary filmmaker (“Still recording“) lived under siege in East Ghouta near Damascus for three years. After the start of the revolution in 2011, he was arrested at a demonstration in the Syrian capital.
