There is an early ballad by Wolf Biermann that explains in eight stanzas why Stalinallee is called what it is called and why the desire to build the most beautiful streets under socialism repeatedly fails in reality. Just like socialism, but the ballad singer could not have guessed that at the time, had to fail because of the realities he had created himself. At the end of the song, Biermann lists a few counter-suggestions and asks at the end with a mock Biermann-like timidity: “Then we’ll build a Biermannstrasse?”
