One of the most striking features of an authoritarian society is its tendency to uniformity. The high pressure to conform that every order of obedience creates is also reflected in fashion. The Germans in the Empire and at the time of the First World War were no exception. But with the end of the monarchy and military society in 1918, the dress code dissolved into an almost eccentric variety, at least in the cities. Women in particular seized the opportunity to try out and reinvent themselves. But many male city dwellers, whose faces or limbs had not been blown away by trench warfare, also enjoyed the new freedom of individual influence.
