Exhibition in Regensburg: Haitzinger’s beer mug spirits – Bavaria

The last section of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal was opened a good 30 years ago. Especially the construction through the Altmühltal was accompanied by strong protests. The caricaturist Horst Haitzinger also lamented the destruction of nature there. “In Memoriam Altmühltal” is the name of the caricature made in 1992, which can now be seen again in the House of Bavarian History in Regensburg. For decades, Haitzinger has accurately followed political events in the Federal Republic and commented on them in several publications. The House of Bavarian History on Regensburg’s Donaumarkt is showing the cabinet exhibition “Haitzinger’s Guardian Angel and Beer Mug Spirits” until October 1st (Tue-Sun 9am-6pm). It shows how the caricaturist explained the political situation in a humorous and subtle way. More than 30 originals illustrate what guardian angels, beer mug spirits and window opening have to do with political ambitions. Regardless of artistic standards, Haitzinger sees his daily work as a caricaturist as a journalistic activity. The protection of nature and the environment is the central concern of his work.
