The Munch exhibition, which can be seen from Friday in the Berlinische Galerie, tells an exciting story, especially when seen from Berlin: namely, that this important artist, who painted exteriors at a time when everyone in the world was doing well, was radically subjective made his own feelings the center of his art and thus paved the way for modernism, without which Berlin is unthinkable. Edvard Munch spent important, formative years in the capital of the Empire, from 1892, with interruptions, until 1908. He created many famous works here, established himself as an artist – and certainly did more for Berlin than Berlin did for him. His first exhibition in Berlin stirred up the stench of the local cultural scene and sparked a storm that drove the city into the future.
