Exhaustion Depression: How Christina Hillesheim Overcame Burnout

Christina Hillesheim worked in a publishing house for ten years until suddenly nothing worked anymore. Diagnosis: burnout. Dem star the sociologist explained how she found her way back to (working) life and what she learned during the crisis about how we deal with stress.

There are more and more cases of burnout in Germany. What do you think: Why does this happen? Exhaustion depression more and more people?

Christina Hillesheim: One reason for the increasing numbers of burnout and depression is certainly that there are simply too many opportunities to express oneself and society has established enormous pressure to perform. This “higher, faster, further” thing causes stress, and then we look left and right to see what our friends are achieving. So you’re constantly trying to keep up, and at some point that unfortunately leads to one or the other burning out.

You yourself were once among those affected. When did you realize something was wrong?
