Ex-US General Ben Hodges on Lambrecht’s resignation and arms deliveries

There is a lot of work to be done to succeed Christine Lambrecht. Ex-US General Ben Hodges calls above all for Germany to play a stronger leading role in NATO – but he also knows why the Germans find it so difficult to develop a coherent Ukraine strategy.

Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht resigned today after massive criticism of her conduct of office. An overdue decision?
I hope that her successor will bring with him the necessary gravitas and experience to help Germany assume a leading role within NATO. Ultimately, however, it is up to Chancellor Olaf Scholz to set the tone and direction of German security policy.

Is the Scholz government’s response to the Ukraine crisis sufficient so far?
no But I know that, for political, cultural and historical reasons, this administration has found it difficult to come up with a coherent strategy to back Ukraine’s fight against Russia.
