Evan Gershkovich in Moscow prison: “He jokes, he reads books”

Evan Gershkovich is arrested in a country he loves. One of his closest friends tells why the US journalist did not want to leave Russia despite the risk after the war began – and how he is doing in prison today.

American journalist Evan Gershkowitz has been in prison in Moscow for three weeks. The authorities accused him of espionage. The 31-year-old Russia correspondent for the Wall Street Journal faces up to 20 years in prison. Only on Tuesday did a Russian court reject the appeal.

The star spoke to several of Gershkovich’s close associates. Some know him as a colleague, for Polina Ivanova he is a good friend. She meets Evan in 2017 when they both start working in Moscow around the same time. “We chased the same stories and became friends very quickly,” says Ivanova, Russia correspondent for the Financial Times.
