Eva Kaili stripped of her position as vice-president

Following her imprisonment on suspicion of corruption, the European Parliament withdraws Eva Kaili from her position as Vice-President. The decision was approved almost unanimously by the deputies present in Strasbourg in plenary session, i.e. 625 votes in favor out of 628 cast, one against and two abstentions. A two-thirds majority was required.

As a reminder, Eva Kaili was expelled from the Greek Socialist Party (Pasok-Kinal), which also wants her to give up her seat in the European Parliament. The Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group in the European assembly announced its suspension “with immediate effect”. On Saturday evening, President Roberta Metsola made public the decision to withdraw her delegations, her title of vice-president could only be withdrawn after a vote. Finally, the Greek Anti-Money Laundering Authority announced on Monday morning the freezing of the parliamentarian’s assets, namely “bank accounts, safes, companies and any other financial assets”.
