No more visas for Russian travelers? This debate is currently occupying the EU institutions. Olaf Scholz is considered the most prominent brakeman of the sanction – and that’s a good thing, because it would be a fatal mistake.

It’s hard to bear the idea of Russian citizens sunning themselves on the Côte d’Azur, populating museums in Florence or Venice – and maybe soon even raising their beer mugs at the Munich Oktoberfest for a toast to conviviality while their warlord Putin terrorize and kill Ukrainian civilians. Infinitely difficult to bear, this idea. But western societies have to endure it.
