European elections 2024: shifting chairs on the right – politics

Before the European elections, the extreme forces are sorting themselves out in Brussels. Which party will belong to which coalition after the election? Manfred Weber, head of the conservative EPP, senses an opportunity.

There they stood, the followers of the right-wing extremist polemicist Éric Zemmour from France, talking about their big plans. A few weeks ago in the Strasbourg Parliament, second floor, right next to the plenary hall: Nicolas Bay, currently the only MEP from Zemmour’s Reconquête party, announced that his party would join the European Conservatives and Reformers (ECR) group. The party family that the British Tories once co-founded, which sits between the Christian Democrats and the staunch nationalists and whose current powerhouse is the Fratelli d’Italia of Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Poland’s ex-government party PiS.
