Atmosphere, tradition, longing: last week’s European Cup shows that there are still success factors in modern football that some clubs cannot simply buy.

If the European Cup week that has just ended has taught us anything, it is above all this: There are things that cannot be bought. Football is still structured in such a way that the sport’s primordial slime comes into play when it comes to everything. FC Villarreal, Manchester City and RB Leipzig also failed because of intangible factors, because of the intangible values of their opponents: the astonishing and fascinating power of history, the longing of the social base, the insatiable hunger for glory, the clubs, for decades like Liverpool, Real, Rangers and also Eintracht Frankfurt feel. In an increasingly pasteurized world, these clubs proudly preserve a biotope that is still sterile.
