In efforts to achieve greater independence from US cloud providers, the federal government has given the go-ahead for a SAP project. The software group could start developing programs for a European cloud infrastructure as part of the IPCEI initiative before the EU approves it. From the EU’s point of view, these are strategically important projects for which looser state aid rules apply. “We need a strong European cloud infrastructure,” said Economics Minister Robert Habeck. US companies such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft currently dominate the market for storage and computer capacities on the Internet.
