Marathon runner Richard Ringer caused a sensation in the marathon. Previously there had already been gold for the German women’s team in the team classification.

With a downright unbelievable final sprint, Ringer won the coveted title in the European Championships on the streets of Munich.

The 33-year-old triumphed in 2:10:21 ahead of Maru Teferi of Israel. Bronze went to his compatriot Gashau Ayale.

Silver in the team ranking

The German record holder Amanal Petros, who was heading for silver on the long home stretch, had to settle for fourth place. Due to health problems, the 27-year-old has not competed in a race since the beginning of April. In the team classification, Germany took silver behind Israel.

Dattke outstanding in fourth place

In her second marathon, Miriam Dattke had previously put on a downright intoxicating performance and missed the bronze medal by just a few centimetres. In the team classification, however, the German team won the gold medal.

Lisowska takes gold

Alexandra Lisowska from Poland won the individual gold. Silver went to Matea Parlov Kostro of Croatia, with Nienke Brinkman of the Netherlands taking bronze.

The only 24-year-old Dattke – daughter of a Rwandan mother and a German father – made a courageous and determined run from the start. The middle-distance specialist, who ran her first ever marathon in Seville in February, was consistently in the leading group.

Drama on the home stretch

About four kilometers before the end, the situation came to a head when the nine-strong lead group literally flew apart. Dattke stayed in front when the group initially reduced to five and a little later to four runners.

Things got dramatic on the long home straight in downtown Munich. Dattke had to let something tear, fought his way back and crossed the finish line almost at the same time as Brinkman from the Netherlands. The finish photo showed that the Dutchwoman was in front.

German women in the team competition in front

For the German women, however, it was enough to win gold in the team ranking. Dattke in fourth place, Domenika Mayer in sixth place and Deborah Schöneborn in tenth place were classified. The team decision was integrated into a European championship for the first time in the Bavarian state capital. The three best starters per nation were included in the ranking.
