The German track cyclists have so far provided a veritable shower of medals at the European Championships in Munich. It continued on the fifth day of competition. Emma Hinze won her third European Championship title in Munich with gold in the sprint race. Maximilian Dörnbach won bronze in the time trial. The women’s Omnium competition was overshadowed by a serious fall.
Millimetre-decision: Emma Hinze becomes European sprint champion
In the sprint final, Emma Hinze made it really exciting again in the evening. After winning the first run easily against her French competitor Mathilde Gros, Hinze couldn’t get past her in the second. A third round had to make the decision. And how!
In a very close final, the 24-year-old from Cottbus pushed past the French in the last few centimeters and crowned herself with her third European title as the track bike queen of Munich.
Her teammate Lea Sophie Friedrich just missed out on a medal. In the small final, she lost out to Laurine van der Riessen from the Netherlands and missed bronze.
Dörnbach wins bronze, Jurczyk is fifth
Maximilian Dörnbach did better in the men’s time trial final. In a gripping race, the 26-year-old showed a strong performance and secured third place. Gold went to Melvin Landerneau from France, silver went to Matteo Bianchi from Italy. The second German starter in the final, Marc Jurczyk, finished fifth.
Omnium: Four disciplines, one European title
The Omnium competitions took place parallel to the time trial and the sprint race. The competition consists of four sub-disciplines, all of which are held within one day. In the scratch, speed race, elimination race and points race, the drivers collect points, which are then added together for the final result.
Heavy fall overshadows women’s points race, Teutenberg sixth
In the last of the four sub-disciplines, the points race, Lea Lin Teutenberg got off to a great start in her race. Right at the beginning she dared a furious advance and secured 20 points by winning the first round. As a result, she jumped from ninth to fourth in the overall standings.
After that, however, the race had to be interrupted for three quarters of an hour due to a serious fall. Greek Argiro Milaki and Ganna Solovei from Ukraine required treatment and were then taken to hospital. In the evening, those responsible gave the all-clear. Both athletes should be conscious.
The 23-year-old Teutenberg ended up sixth. The Italian Rachele Barbierei became European Champion ahead of the French Clara Copponi and Daria Pikulik Poland.
Moritz Malcharek in eleventh place after three of four disciplines
In the men’s Omnium competition, the only German starter, Moritz Malcharek, is currently in eleventh place. After twelfth place at half-time, the 25-year-old from Berlin was able to move up slightly in seventh place in the elimination race.
