Long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo was satisfied with her European Championship silver medal and spoke of fatigue in the competition after her recent corona infection.

“I’m definitely satisfied with the performance. Of course it’s a shame that it wasn’t enough for gold,” said the 28-year-old in an interview published on Friday at “sportschau.de”.

The interview was conducted after Mihambo’s lap of honor on Thursday evening. In the ARD interview, she already pointed out that she could hardly breathe because Corona had been a lot. Before further talks in the interview zone of the Munich Olympic Stadium, Mihambo suffered a circulatory collapse. On the night of Friday, management and the association gave the information that the world champion was doing better again.

“I noticed the tiredness after the third attempt. I didn’t give up, I fought anew with every attempt and said to myself, six times you’re going full throttle,” reported Mihambo after the difficult competition that she finished with 7.03 meters. “It worked out quite well. It just wasn’t supposed to be today. And I think that’s okay too.”

Gold was won by the world indoor champion Ivana Vuleta from Serbia, who jumped three centimeters further than Mihambo. “I’m also happy about a second place, you have to fight hard for that first. I just hope that I’ll recover further and then see how the next competitions are,” said Mihambo.
