As fantastic as the competitions at the European Championships in Munich are: That’s why it’s audacious to drum up an Olympic bid for 2036.

It’s hard to imagine, but the Olympic Games also started small – with nine sports, 43 competitions and 241 athletes. That was in Athens in 1896. In the 125 years since then, the Games have gotten bigger and bigger, gigantic and gigantic. In 2021 in Tokyo they have reached 33 sports, 339 competitions and 11,420 athletes (and about as many supervisors and officials). According to official information from the organizers, the whole fun cost 13 billion US dollars, around eleven billion euros.
